Hard Back. Etat : Good. 1st Edition in This Form. an illustrated page + advertising page + Title page + 430 pages + advertising page. Original binding in good condition, minor ageing/edge wear. Contents fair/good, owner name to inside cover, otherwise due to the publisher using poor quality paper, pages browned with age. Not dated, the publisher Matthew Whellens had very large shops in Finchley Road, Camden Road & Balham in London, Open Library lists him as a publisher in 1850, 1851 & 1894.Olive was 1st published in 1850, but her big one was John Halifax, Gentleman in 1857, so not sure if this was published about 1857 or as late as the1890's. But during this period, a number of English publishers published her books with or without the author's permission, especially as even the 1st editions were published without the author's name. Even so it is now hard to find a genuine Victorian copy like this copy as you will find some dealers listing modern reprints with say an 1875 date, when it is a 2008 modern reprint. This is a genuine Victorian copy. Size: 13 x 18.5cm Approx.
