Hardcover. Etat : Very good-. Etat de la jaquette : Very good-. First Edition. Octavo, 309pp., illustrated. About very good in the publisher's blue-green cloth. Edges foxed, with occasional internal foxing, but the photographic plates quite clean. In the rare pictorial dust jacket, also somewhat foxed, with some chips to spine ends, but really a nice surviving example; about very good. A magnificent travel narrative of a courageous and independent female mountaineer, born to Fabian socialist parents in Cheshire, England, and who eventually became the first female solicitor in New South Wales, Australia, where she lived most of her life. She eventually became a Buddhist, and helped to popularize that religion in Australia, writing several books on the subject. It was just before she founded her legal practice that she set about this round-the-world adventure, in 1927. Byles' lively and unyielding tone is summed up nicely in this quotation from her Introduction: "[.]I would point out that people do not return from mountaineering bandaged, maimed, and crippled as they do from ski-ing [sic]. If they get injured while climbing, they generally have the decency to be killed outright." A very uncommon book; truly rare in dust jacket.
