]. 47p. Modern red cloth, back with gilt lettered black label (Ateliers (Laurenchet). Second edition. This pamphlet concerns the case against Frederic Degeorge (1797-1854), editor of a democratic journal in the department Pas-de-Calais and known as a violent opponent of Louis-Philippe. He is accused of 'crimes against the person of the King, inciting to hatred and insult of his government' etc. in an article written on the occasion of Cabet's acquittal earlier that year. This is the first in a series of propagandistic pamphlets issued by Cabet as Publications du Populaire, though this series title does not appear in this second edition. The first edition appeared with a slightly different title (Proces du Propagateur du Pas-de-Calais) counting 40 pages only. *Prudhommeaux A8 (first edition). Maitron II,p.36.

. 64p. Recent half calf, marbled sides, gilt back (Laurenchet). A very nice copy indeed. First edition. The first publication of Etienne Cabet, the future author of the famous utopian novel Voyage en Icarie. Cabet was the son of a cooper and a lawyer by profession, had for a time joined the sect of the French carbonari, but soon started to dislike its secret character. He took part in the revolution of July 1830 and was sent to Corsica as an attorney general, but dismissed because of his republican sympathy showed for the Polish insurgents. He was elected deputy for the Cote-d'Or in July 1831. In this pamphlet Cabet deplores the republican failure and severely attacks the Camarilla ('court-clique') of Louis-Philippe. He also discusses the revolutionary events of 1830/31 in Belgium, Italy and Poland, 'emanated from the French revolution'. He arrives at the conclusion that it is 'a true declaration of war on the despotic governments'. *Prudhommeaux A2.

. 12mo. [II],XII,3-636p., thus complete. Contemp. half purple calf, back romanticly gilt decorated, marbled endpapers and edges. First edition. The second major book of Etienne Cabet, the author of the famous utopian novel Voyage en Icarie of 1839. In the 1840's Cabet tried to convert his fellow communists, those who favoured revolutionary violence to gain political power and those who based themselves on purely materialistic principles like his former secretary Dezamy, to his peaceful Icarian communism. In the present volume, reprinted twice before 1850, Cabet explains that his communist society is based upon Christian principles. His 'true Christianism' is deistic and rational, and his God is the god of equality and justice to the poor and oppressed. It yielded him considerable support among the workers and in January 1848 a first group of 69 colonists left France to establish an Icarian settlement in America. *Prudhommeaux A86 (dated August 1846!). 4to. 1 page on bifolium with integral address panel. To Monsieur Luce and other unnamed addressees about 2700 f which Cabet and other gentlemen owe to Cossinet for the supply of his carriages. Furthermore, Cossinet demands another 1200 f for those "sous-pentes" (with slanting roofs). Only the latter sum can be contested before the commercial court. Cossinet delegated 1286 f to M. Fornin, who came to ask for the payment of this sum in the name of Cossinet. Cabinet and other gentlemen advised M. Vallier to give a mandate for the 1286 f to M. Fornin, as they do not see any disadvantage in doing so, and announce that the addressees will receive this mandate: "Messieurs, Nous devons encore à Cossinet, pour la fourniture de ses voitures, 2700 f qui ne peuvent être contestés. Il réclame un outre près de 1200 f pour tel sous-pentes; et c'est pour cette dernière sommes seulement que nous sommes en contestation avec lui devant le tribunal de commerce. Il a délégué 1286 f à M. Fornin, et celui-ci est venu demander le paiement de cette somme au nom de Cossinet. Nous avons conseillé à M. Vallier de donner un mandat pour cette somme de 1286 f à M. Fornin, ne voyant aucun inconvénient à cela. Vous allez recevoir ce mandat [.]". - Cabet went to Paris in 1820, as he was legally banned for a year from practicing law in his home town. In Paris, Cabet united with other ideologues of the resistance to monarchy and theocracy, such as the followers of Saint-Simon's New Christianity and Babeuf's Society of Equals. In 1840 Cabet published the novel "Voyage en Icarie" which represented his theories of the ideal community. For the realisation of his ideas, Cabet and several hundred followers landed in New Orleans in 1848/49. Cabet purchased the old Mormon settlement at Nauvoo and launched his so-called "Icaria". - With lithographed letterhead "Petites Messageries dans Paris." and "Rue de Seine-St-G., hôtel de la Rochefoucould". 18mo. pp. 2 p.l., viii, 600. with half-title. 19th 19th century half roan (extremities worn, some light browning & foxing). Cabet wrote his famous communistic romance in London, where he had fled to escape prosecution for his political views and attacks on the French government. It was published after his return to France in 1839, where he also began to disseminate his political ideas in the journal the Populaire, attracting considerable support among the radical working class. Influenced by Owen, he entered into negotiations to purchase land in Texas to put his theories into practice. He drew up an elaborate scheme for his colony 'Icaria', whose leading principle was community of property, and the first colonists were sent out on the third of February 1848. The colony met with disaster, and Cabet decided to go to America himself to lead those remaining to settle at Nauvoo in Illinois. Kress C.6555. cfNegley 175. cfSabin 9787. cfStreeter VII 4245.
