Hardcover. Etat : Near Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. 140pp., xiv. Stated "Eighth Edition" with same number of pages as First Edition in 1934. Black and white frontispiece photo-illustration of wood chest with ornate carving. Brown cloth with orange lettering across top front over and on spine. Spine sunned with only slightly diminished brown, compared to covers, orange lettering on spine still distinct and readable; paste-down age-toning to endapers, with small amount of tiny foxing speckles (period artifact, character rich); tiniest curls at corners, virtually no rubbing wear. Spine strong, corners sharp, no previous owner names. Clean text."He makes his instruction practicable and understandablewithout neglecting the philosophy which shouldlie behind every craft practiced more for its therapeutic effect upon the practicer than for any value of its products. For wood-carving is a cure for many of our social ills. As the old Grand Rapids woodcarver observed: " You have to have a good disposition to work in wood." The point is, that you have to have it, or you get it; for there is a tonic quality in the feel of chisel against block, in that contest between your mastery of the tool and the wilfulness of the grain, that renders you for the time being wholly oblivious to all earthly cares." (from Calkins' Foreword).

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. No Jacket. 8vo., 260 pgs. Blue cloth binding, no appreciable wear. This has come from a New England Library and bears very attractive bookplates from them, including a terrific statement of 4 simple library "rules". No marks in the book (1 of the rules) and only a slight break starting in the rear gutter mull. Speaking of himself in the 3rd person, Calkins tells a wonderful story of his life, overcoming the barriers of his handicap, starting a private press, succeeding in the publishing business and the literary world, in fact succeeding at everything he did ! Very good condition (no dust jacket).
