Leather Binding. Etat : Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. Folio - over 12" - 15" Tall (thin). 3 volumes complete; bound uniformly in 3/4 polished brown calf over maroon marbled boards, gilt-stamped and blind-ruled spines with partly raised bands and gilt-stamped black morocco spine labels, matching marbled endpapers, all edges trimmed. Solid, leather-bound set of an important encyclopedic historical survey. Some wear to heads and feet of spines; slight cracking to spine edges (chiefly at heads); slight rubbing and browning to covers (leather over boards; chiefly to edges); several boards are loose (detatched but present); previous owner's holograph ink signature at head of title page recto of volume 1; slight internal browning and/or foxing (chiefly to edges and preliminaries). [ca. 250] pages per volume (including plates). Title on spines: Camden's Britannia. Notable English-language issue; 'translated from the edition published by the author in MDCVII [1607], enlarged by the latest discoveries' (title page, volume 1); contains all 97 of the individual copperplates called for, with 8 of the maps (of the original 55-map total; chiefly in the third volume, and chiefly of the major land divisions, with none of the county maps as called for); also apparently lacking the folding genealogical chart of Oliver Cromwell (which is not mentioned in the indexes of plates); but containing the engraved portrait of Camden as the frontispiece of volume 1. Translator's preface (signed 'R. G.', dated April 23, 1789; volume 1); indexes and list of plates and maps at rear of all volumes. BMC, volume 4, page 1045, column 612; originally published in 2 parts in 1586 (and first translated from Latin into English in 1610).97 Engraved Plates; 8 Color Maps; 38 Engraved Text Figures & Decorations.
