(B&W photographs) A selection of letters from a noted paleontologist, written to his family while he was on various field research trips throughout the Western United States; letters are dated from 1897 to 1929. Dr. Matthew (1871-1930) was with the American Museum of Natural History in New York for 33 years, where he was named curator of the Department of Vertebrate Paleontology in 1911. He spent several years, later in his life, as a professor at the University of California, and ultimately his papers and books formed the nucleus of the Matthew Memorial Library of Paleontology, a part of the Geology Branch Library. Clyman was a guide, trapper and 'mountain man' from the early 1820s until 1848, when he settled in California's Napa Valley and lived out his days as a prosperous farmer. He was one of the first white men to traverse South Pass (in 1826), and was a frequent companion of the likes of John Charles Fremont, Jedediah Smith and Thomas Fitzpatrick. This text of his diaries was originally published in installments in the California Historical Society Quarterly from 1925 to 1927, and issued in book form by the Society in 1928, in a small edition of 300 copies Howes calls this 'One of the most trustworthy narratives of the far west, for the period 1842-6; the only Oregon overland journal of 1844' -- Howes C81.
