Brick red cloth lettered in black to spine and cover with a small pictorial portrait to lower corner of cover board. Light rub and superficial fray to cloth at tips and spine ends. A somewhat heavy bump to the front edge of the cover board has nicked the cloth 1/3" and left a tiny tear to the margin of the first 15 or so pages. Still solidly readable and reasonably attractive. Hardcover. Etat : Near Fine. Marguerite De Angeli (illustrateur). 1st Edition. A very rare Harper & Brothers First Edition. Stated First Edition. Illustrated by Caldecott and Newbery winner Marguerite De Angeli. This book is in excellent condition. Take a look at the photos. The blue covers are exceptionally clean. The red lettering on the spine is very bright. On the spine it is less so, but still quite legible. The corners and edges are in very good shape. The spine ends have a little bit of bend and crinkle. The top one also has a few speck-sized spots of rub-through. The book is very solidly bound from cover to cover. There are no cracks or spaces to be found anywhere. The inside covers and end papers form the same color illustration. They are all in very good condition. The pages are in very good shape. The pages are lightly toned at their margins, but are exceptionally clean. In fact, I'm not seeing any soiling at all. There are a few pages with a very thin crease off the top edge, quite minor. There are no turned-down or placeholder corner creases to be found anywhere. There are no markings in the book. There are no attachments. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. There are ten full-page illustrations, including the frontispiece. I've counted and accounted for all of them. They are all in excellent condition. The frontispiece is in color, the others are in black and white.

First edition. First edition. Near fine, bright, tight copy in dust jacket with light wear to head of spine. The dog barked at the beautiful porcelain fish and Brade knew then how tragic the affair was. He took the case because he had come down to the murder scene to buy the precious little Chinese object. He had stayed because he was the only one who understood the characters of the many odd people involved and the only one who seemed worried by the handkerchief and the absence of dust. The death of a great political figure is in itself sensational. His death in a fine country home, surrounded by fox-hunting people on one hand and radical literary people on the other made it even more sensational. It was a case that required the finest skill, the most delicate tact and Brade had those qualities.
