Encuadernación de tapa blanda. Etat : Nuevo. Dora Carrington (illustrateur).

Etat : Sehr gut. Marbled half leather binding, 406 + 352 pages (the printer had some problems apparently with the "3" in the 8th volume, quite often he used a "5" in the pagination, but the book is complete), some foxing, some water staininggood condition. Former library book with a bookplate on front cover and on the front endpaper, this mentioning "From the collection of James Strachey. Presented by Mrs. Strachey" (and deaccession stamp verso the title). Previous owner name "H. M. Bazely" on the title pages. The leather on the spine was at some time restored, in a bit ligher colour than the leather on the covers, but still quite decorative. Hinges with library tape repaired. Also from the library of Lytton Strachey, with his small bookplate created for him by Dora Carrington in the mid-1920ies. As this is an original print made by Carrington, it is a good opportunity to acquire a small work of art by her, which is rarely offered. Nice Bloomsbury association copy, James was Lytton`s youngest brother and spend most of his life translating the works of Sigmund Freud, which were then published in Virgina Woolf`s Hogarth Press. Single volume from an incomplete set. Sprache: Französisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

Two pages, cr. 8vo, fold marks, good condition. Text: "Your enquiry about woodcuts and bookplates made by my sister Dora Carrington for Lytton Strachey and others: You will find in the book on her Letters & Diaries edited by David Garnett (Cape 1970) and Paper Back OUP, several reproductions of her work in that medium, either for Hogarth Press, or for book plates for friends. It was John Nash who taught her, he himself being an experienced engraver. I have one of two original proofs but value them too highly to spare them. I also have a photo copy of several which I had made for reference which I could loan you if you are anxious, though it is not any use for reproduction. I gave some account of this & other crafts she took up in my book on her art [.]. | Your P.S. about a bookplate by Halsey Ricardo is something I do not recall. Lytton's library was left to his brother James and to Roger Senhouse. But all his brothers & sisters died some time ago. I believe the widow of his nephew, Dick Strachey, may have inherited some of the library [.]. | I am afraid that is all the help I can give you.".

Livre
The illustrated catalogue for the Upper Grosvenor Galleries exhibition of Paintings, Drawings, Illustrations etc supported by The Arts Council. Introductory note Carrington The Artist: A Tragedy of Love by Max Wykes-Jones. Noel Carrington in his Biographical Note on the inside of the lower wrapper notes, "Very little of her work was ever exhibited and this is the first collection that has been attempted." This copy from the library of Lady Anne Hill who loaned her painting Horses in Circus to the exhibition. An ink note on the front wrapper notes "See No. 30" and there is a note by No. 30 in the catalogue "faded self portrait on verso". With the catalogue there are two typed letters to Lady Anne Hill signed from Suzanne Beauclerk, Duchess of St Albans, who ran the Grosvenor Galleries. The first requests the loan of Horses in Circus, the second thanks her for the loan. With a (folded and creased ) invitation to the opening of the exhibition. Also with an autograph letter signed by Noel Carrington to Lady Anne on Long Acre Farm headed paper dated July 28 '74. "Dear Mrs Hill, My friend Frances Partridge tells me you have my sister's painting of the Circus Horses. I have been preparing a book on her and should very much like to have a photograph of it. Studio Vista are interested in publishing, though it depends as usual on costs and the Americans. If you already have a photograph I should like a copy. Otherwise I would wait till the prospect of using it is certain. Yours sincerely Noel Carrington." With a note at the bottom of the letter in Heywood Hill's hand "Attempt at Self portrait on back of picture." Letter folded. With two black and white photographic negatives of the front and back of the painting. The image of the verso showing the self portrait. Noel Carrington's book on his sister did not appear until 1978 published by The Oxford Polytechnic Press. A copy of the book is included with the exhibition catalogue (limited edition, unnumbered copy, signed by Noel Carrington). Horses in Circus is illustrated in black and white. The self portrait is not reproduced and so this negative would appear to be the only reproduction of this Dora Carrington artwork. 8vo., pp. 12 original stiff card wrappers with Carrington's painting of The Mill at Tidmarsh reproduced in colour on upper wrapper. With black and white illustrations of 4 other paintings. A very good copy.

Hardcover. Dora Carrington (illustrateur). First Edition. Dora Carrington. First Edition. Hardcover. Dora Carrington. Bookplate for Lytton Strachey. Circa 1931. Small. 1" by 3/4 " with the words Lytton Strachey in a plaque or cartouche with folded edges surrounded by net-like cross hatching in dark sepia tone. Stuck to a marbled board: 6 1/2" x 4". Carrington wrote of this bookplate in her diary (March 20 1931) rather prophetically:- 'As I stuck the book plates in with Lytton I suddenly thought of Sothebys and the book plates in some books I had looked at, when Lytton was bidding for a book and I thought: These books will one day be looked at by those gloomy faced booksellers and buyers. And suddenly a premonition of a day when these labels will no longer (be) in this library came over me. I longed to ask Lytton not to stick in any more.' Strachey died 10 months later.
