First edition; 4to (22 x 17 cm); illustrated throughout with some full-page; publisher's original pictorial boards, a very good copy. A wonderful translation with beautiful illustrations of one of the most popular children's stories of all time. Zakhoder's version was hugely popular in the Soviet era and is still one of the standard Russian translations. As well as translating directly from the original text, he also added new content to make it easier for Russian children to understand. Zakhoder did publish his own works for children but he was mainly celebrated (and awarded the Russian state prize) for his translations which also included Winnie-the-Pooh and Mary Poppins.

29/34 COPIES printed on Rives BFK paper, signed by the printer and artist Vladimir Zimakov, linocuts in tan and black, accordion-folded, pp. [36], square 4to, original quarter red cloth and tan cloth sides, backstrip lettered in black, upper board lettered in dark brown with reproduction of original linocut illustration, patterned endpapers, housed in matching red and brown slipcase, new. An imaginative and accomplished piece of printing, strikingly illustrated. The printer makes clever use of different type to convey the nonsensical tone of the poem, which was sung by the White Knight in Carroll's 'Through the Looking Glass': only Kabel used for the narrator, whilst the aged man speaks in an eccentric combination of Caslon, Gill Sans, Goudy Old Style, Trajan, Futura, Caviar Dreams, Din and Porter.

I m going to venture to give you a hint (being an old friend) that you might do a real kindness to my niece Menella Dodgson (always called ,Nella ) who is very near you, if you would take notice of her, + perhaps ask her to yur house, + thus brighten a little the rather dull-life of a school-teacher. Small-8vo. 2 1/2 pp. Double sheet. Slightly age toned. Charming letter in which Lewis Carroll explains how to operate a music box that he has just gifted to his friend. My dear Louie, I am very glad the musical box gives you so much pleasure. There is a little Knob which can be moved backwards and forwards when it is in its present position, the box plays the same tune over and over again: and when it is moved into the other position, the box plays its 4 tunes through, and then begins them again, and so on. It will not play them in any other order. If you want to have any tune repeated, you must move the knob, to make it repeat, before finishing the tune. If you wait till the end of the tune and then move it, the box will go on to the next tune. Believe me always yours affectionately. C. L. Dodgson.".
