IN WONDERFUL CONDITION! the artist Cecil Skotnes (b East London, Cape Province, 1 June 1926 died April 2009 ). South African printmaker and painter. He studied art at the Technical College (1946) and then at the University of the Witwatersrand (1947-51), both in Johannesburg. The European orientation of his studies was balanced by his interest in African cultural traditions, making him a motivating force behind the emergence in the 1960s of the urban black art movement in South Africa. According to the Mercury, this weekend saw the passing of one of South Africa's great artists, Cecil Skotnes, at age 82. Skotnes is known for his work at Roarke's Drift and Polly Street art centres and recognisable by a distinctive style dominated by sharp coloured woodprints. In 2003, the South African government awarded him the Order of the Ikhamanga (Gold) for his contribution to South African art. Unnumbered. By Author and Artist.
