Hard Cover. Etat : Good Plus. First Edition. Burgundy binding with gilt lettering; 156pp plus errata page; b/w decorative lettering and tailpieces. Boards lightly marked with rubbing to corners, spine ends and spine edge; hinges just starting to crack; occasional spotting and smudge to pages; the untrimmed page edges are untidy towards the end of the book and two pages are unopened. The reverse of the front endpaper is signed Frances Birch, Jan 13th 1871, presumably a relative of the author, and another hand has written underneath 'My Great Aunt, Ralphs's Grate [sic] Great Aunt; there is also a slip of paper laid in signed 'Yours Truly, John O'Neill'. A scarce collection of poetry by the author of 'Fans of Japan' which includes 'Lady Leonore' and 'To the United Fatherland'. Front hinge starting, foxing to inside FEP and facing half-title, and inside REP and facing page. Contents and plates remarkably clean and fresh. Some foxing and minor wear to yellow pictorial cloth binding. Significant chips, particularly at spine extremities, and wear to dustjacket, but the illustrated front panel is almost completely intact. VG overall. Rare in DJ.
