Soft cover. Etat : VG for age. 1st ed. xxii (up to xviii various publishers' ads, but Society for Psychical Research details verso front cover)+721-960, another pub.notice recto back cover; few brown flecks to final leaves, one opening browned due to insert (see below) otherwise clean and unmarked but there is a 4 cm x 7 cm blue bordered label centre p.iii (the first actual leaf) inscribed 'On Loan/ The property of/ J.Ellerton/Catford' plus 2 further lines in minute writing of which I can make out 'Hon.Secy. 1915' (perhaps 1918). this is curious rather than a fault in my view. Green card issue covers are clean but spine and strip along spine on back very faded, spine ends a little rubbed and nick top front joint, 2 cm thin white strip of paper adhering to front joint, faint trace of erased penciling to back. Despite faults, none very serious, a still attractive issue of this scarce journal. This is interesting from 3 major angles. First is a light-hearted fictional conversation 'Is Nature Good?' by John Dewey, second is G.T.Ladd's 'The Confusion of Pragmatism' and thirdly a response by G.K.Chesterton to an article by 'Rev. Mr Roberts' entitled 'Jesus or Christ?'; there is a slipped in notice at this point advertising the forthcoming appearance of a Supplement of the same title containing contributions by 16 religious writers and theologians (but inc. Sir Oliver Lodge) - this has left the opening browned but I have left it in situ. Clearly the debate had rolled on since neither Roberts, Chesterton nor Prof. Moulton (another respondent) appeared in the Supplement. (I note that this Supplement was the only 'hit' which a search for Hibbert Journal yielded at time of cataloguing.).
