Hardcover. Etat : Good. Two massively heavy, oversized volumes in tall quarto format, newly rebound in matching brown cloth and with fine brown cloth labels over spines, black lettering thereover. Predictably waffled pages, moderate, even foxing, but clean, unmarked and still reasonably bright of interior, with all plates and a map, collated as complete (see condition notes below). The first volume incorporates the title page from the original, true First Edition from 1837, this exemplar of Volume I being of the Seventh Edition, published in 1844 by Robert Carter of New York. A particularly fine black-and-white engraving of "The Reception of the First Missionaries at Otaheite," four pieces of tape at gutter, bound in. This exemplar of Volume II is of the Fifth Edition, published in 1838 in Boston by Gould, Kendall and Lincoln and Crocker and Brewster. The original First Edition's title page from 1838 is also bound in here and features a stunning black-and-white engraving of "Church Missionary Settlement of Rangihoua in New Zealand," plates having been printed by C.S. Holland, published originally by Gould, Kendall & Lincoln. At frontis to Volume II, protected by tissue guard, is depicted in a black-and-white engraving, "Seizure of Dr. Judson," presumably by "heathens," by D.C. Johnson. Volume I: xl, 8-616 pp. Preface to First, Second, Third and Fourth Editions bound in, and a very heavily inked set of four fingerprints at gutter. Included are histories of the Moravian Missions to Greenland, missions to the West Indies, North America, Labrador, South Africa, and Asiatic Russia, and also "Unsuccessful Missions." Then English Baptist Missionary Society missions are covered in Bengal, The Burman Empire, Orissa, Hindoostan, the Asiatic Islands, Jamaica, and elsewhere. The London Missionary Society's missions to the South Seas, African Islands and East Indies are also covered, alongside those to South America and elsewhere. Finally are covered activities of the Church Missionary Society, all over the world. List of Plates follows, all present. Volume II covers The English Methodist Missionary Society, the Scottish Missionary Society, The American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, The American Methodist Episcopal Missionary Society, The Domestic and Foreign Missionary Society of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States, and then the "Minor Missions." Volume II: xiv, 1-610 pp. and including an Appendix to the First Edition and another four Appendixes to the Fourth Edition. Torn plate at p. 128 of Volume II, and some previous owner unfortunately inserted fresh, green leaves at several points of Volume II, thus leading to some damp-staining for short ranges of pages. No odor detected, but then again, Covid-19 robbed me of my olfactory faculties . . . All in, a valuable, massive survey of Christian mission activities around the world.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.
