Hardcover. Etat : Good. RARE! 192 pages, a good plus hardback with an ANTIQUARIAN binding - dark leather spine with gilt ruled bands and gilt lettering. Leather continuing over the covers and in the corners of the boards - these being dark cloth. A circular stamp on the ffep is the only evidence that the book is from a Theological Library - indeed, we should really class it as Very Good but there is half a dozen pages with ink spots - these do it impend the text.

Didbin notes that Davies was a "learned and judicious editor" and that the Cambridge editions supervised by Davies were the "best printed" and "very correct." "De finibus bonorum et malorum ("On the ends of good and evil") is a philosophical work by the Roman orator, politician and philosopher Marcus Tullius Cicero. It consists of five books, in which Cicero explains the philosophical views of Epicureanism, Stoicism, and the Platonism of Antiochus of Ascalon. The book was developed in the summer of the year 45 BC, and was written over the course of about one and a half months. Together with the Tusculanae Quaestiones written shortly afterwards, De finibus is the most extensive philosophical work of Cicero. It is dedicated to Marcus Junius Brutus." (wikipedia).

Of this edition Didman writes that he "believes" it to be designated the "Edit. Opt." (best edition). "Such are the editions of various portions of the philosophical works of Cicero by Dr. Davies. They are justly popular impressions; and the best editions of them form parts of a complete set of the Variorum Cicero in octavo." "The De Legibus (On the Laws) is a dialogue written by Marcus Tullius Cicero during the last years of the Roman Republic. It bears the same name as Plato's famous dialogue, The Laws. Unlike his previous work De re publica, in which Cicero felt compelled to set the action in the times of Scipio Africanus Minor, Cicero wrote this work as a fictionalized dialogue between himself, his brother Quintus and their mutual friend Titus Pomponius Atticus. The dialogue begins with the trio taking a leisurely stroll through Cicero's familial estate at Arpinum and they begin to discuss how the laws should be. Cicero uses this as a platform for expounding on his theories of natural law of harmony among the classes." (wikipedia).

"De Officiis (On Duties or On Obligations) is a 44 BC treatise by Marcus Tullius Cicero divided into three books, in which Cicero expounds his conception of the best way to live, behave, and observe moral obligations. The work discusses what is honorable (Book I), what is to one's advantage (Book II), and what to do when the honorable and private gain apparently conflict (Book III). For the first two books Cicero was dependent on the Stoic philosopher Panaetius, but wrote more independently for the third book. The work's legacy is profound. Although not a Christian work, St. Ambrose in 390 declared it legitimate for the Church to use (along with everything else Cicero, and the equally popular Roman philosopher Seneca, had written). It became a moral authority during the Middle Ages. Of the Church Fathers, St. Augustine, St. Jerome and even more so St. Thomas Aquinas, are known to have been familiar with it. Illustrating its importance, some 700 handwritten copies remain extant in libraries around the world dating back to before the invention of the printing press. Only the Latin grammarian Priscian is better attested to with such handwritten copies, with some 900 remaining extant. Following the invention of the printing press, De Officiis was the third book to be printedâ "third only to the Gutenberg Bible and Donatus's "Ars Minor", which was the first printed book." (wikipedia) First Graevii edition, followed by another more "correctly printed" in 1691 and a later 1710 edition "much enlarged" (Dibdin I-415).
