Octavo, pp. [1-2] [1] 2-211 [212] [1] 2-44 [45-46: blank] [note: last leaf is a blank], original red cloth, front panel stamped in gold and blind, rear panel stamped in blind. First edition. Presentation copy with inscription by Colville: "Miss H. M. Young / with the author's / best regards / Christmas 1898" on the front free endpaper. "Fantasy novel dealing with clairvoyance and other metaphysical subjects; includes a spiritual visit to Sirius, one of whose rulers, Azoriel, visits Earth. The same kind of stuff as DASHED AGAINST THE ROCK (1894) but with perhaps a slightly more substantial interplanetary quantum." - Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy Volume II, p. 32. The trip to Sirius takes place in an airship, "a boat, something after the fashion of a Venetian gondola" which moves swiftly through the air (page 75). Sirius is a utopian world inhabited by an advanced humanoid race which is monitoring mankind's spiritual progress on the Earth. (see Chapter VI, "A Trip to Sirius," etc.). Locke, Voyages in Space (2011) V190. Reginald 03232. Not in Bleiler (1948; 1978). Not in Wright, American Fiction, 1876-1900. A bright, nearly fine copy. Very scarce. (#138259).
