Octavo, original red cloth stamped in yellow gold and blind. First edition. Collects twenty-two tales of criminal life in London. In his brief introduction, the author notes, "There are gay colours even in the seamy side; and in these day-to-day sketches of life as it passes through the London police and county courts, my aim has been to emphasize the human more than the criminal note. That is why the reader will, I trust, find more laughter than tears in these pages, which present the police court as a stage of comedies rather than a chamber of horrors." Hubin (1994), p. 189. A bit of patchy fading to cloth along spine panel and at edges, pulpy text paper tanned, a very good copy. (#128293).
