Octavo, original blue cloth. First edition. A short novel and seven short stories, the novel, "Parson Brand," being a dark tale of a retired slaver who becomes a parson, but vengeance finally catches up with him. Most of the other stories have medieval and/or ecclesiastical settings. In "The Luck of Lindisfarne," an abbot thinks he has cornered a werewolf -- but it is only a stray Viking. In "The Obeah-Man," an incident sets off (without invoking the supernatural directly) a series of revenge and counter-revenge involving an African witch doctor. Cornford wrote journalism and short stories, and was a friend of W. E. Henley (to whom he dedicated this book). See Kemp, Mitchell and Trotter, Edwardian Fiction, p. 77 (for a short entry on Cornford generally). Some scattered foxing to text block, a very good copy. (#113808).
