Sensationalist history of Haiti and voodoo, published during the American occupation in part as a sequel to the author's Black Baghdad (1933), advertised on the rear panel of the present dust jacket as "The Arabian Nights Adventures of a Marine Captain in Haiti." The author, a former U.S. Marine captain, served as "a white officer of black troops in the interior and subsequently as Chief of Police in Port au Prince."
