Mrs Craven was born in England, daughter of a French royalist emigré, later marrying the Hon. Keppel Richard Craven. This novel is dedicated by the translator to the novelist Georgiana Fullerton.

Craven, née de La Ferronnays, was a French novelist and essayist, much influenced by her devout Catholic upbringing. She was born in London, the daughter of a French diplomat, but spent her formative years on the continent, most notably in St Petersburg, Paris, and Rome. Spine darkened, extremities modestly worn, front hinge cracked with front fly loose and laid in, about very good. Margaret Neilson Armstrong's copy with her illustrated bookplate on the front pastedown and Signed in pencil by Armstrong on the front fly. The bookplate is of "Catherina, 1903" with a stained glass background. Presumably, designed by both Margaret and her sister Helen Armstrong as they both would work on art projects together as children whilst watching their father create stained glass artwork. A scarce copy particularly with Armstrong's signature and bookplate.
