Wear to extremities (chiefly to spine edges and corners; spine splitting at edges); some soiling, rubbing and browning to covers (chiefly to edges and corners); previous owner's ink inscription on front attached endpaper; tape reinforcement to inner hinges at top and lower edges; slight internal browning and/or foxing (chiefly to preliminaries and edges; generally unaffecting plates). [ca. 125] pages (including plates; unpaginated). Text in French. Spine title: Robert-Macaire. Second part of the pictorial depiction of the title gentleman of many talents (including lawyer, quacksalver, mesmerist, etc); numbers 51 to 101 in the series (this copy lacks plate 68, and substitutes a duplicate copy of the text and illustration for plate 96 in its place). Bound in half brown morocco over green heavy stock boards, gilt-stamped and decorated spine and covers, plain endpapers, all edges trimmed. Scarce in any condition. First edition. 27 cm; 3 volumes in two. 150 lithographs, including 45 by Daumier (among them 27 from "Croquis d'expression") and 42 by Gavarni. Half titles present. Plates not colored in. Bound in recent green crushed morocco over marbled boards, ruled in gilt; spines titled in gilt. Marbled edges. Endleaves foxed; some scattered toning. Overall a clean copy. References: Ray, #164 ("one of the freshest and most attractive of romantic illustrated books"); Carteret III, 426-27. The great Parisian caricaturists of the mid-19th-century: Daumier, Gavarni, Grandville, Travies, and others, represented with original lithographs illustrating short prose pieces by Alhoy, Huart, and Philipon.

Reliure de l'époque en demi-maroquin à coins vert bouteille et plats de papier marbré brun et vert, bordé de filets dorés. Dos lisse richement orné et doré, titre et tranches dorés.
