Hardcover. Etat : Near Fine. 1951 Lakeside Classic. 380 pages including an index and a historical introduction by Dr. Milo Milton Quaife. Tissue guarded frontispiece which is a portrait of Geronimo. There are nine other photographs in the work that are also tissue guarded protecting the illustrations and all are in place with no tears or other damage. Pages are clean and bright. No underlining, no highlighting, no bookplates, no owner names, not ex-libris, no folded or dogeared pages, no smudges. The cloth covers are red or maroon and have gilt lettering on the spine. "The Lakeside Press" at the bottom of the spine has a touch of wear on the L & a in Lakeside, although both are readable. The border on the front cover and the Lakeside Press emblem are clear and sharp. The top edge gold gilt is very clean and bright and the outer edges are deckled. Some pages need careful pulling apart indicating that the entire work has never been read. The volume itself has a clear archival quality cover that is easily removed if desired, this was added when I acquired the volume decades ago. A very nice copy; available for immediate shipment, carefully packed in a sturdy box.

lxxi,[2],380,[2]pp. plus three plates. Frontispiece. 12mo. Original dark red cloth, spine gilt, front board gilt-ruled with gilt- stamped publisher's logo, t.e.g. Spine slightly faded, light shelf wear. Interior bright and unmarked. Near fine. Lakeside Press reprint, with new historical introduction by the editor and author's preface reprinted from original 1929 edition. This is number forty-nine in the Lakeside Classics series. Davis was a recent West Point graduate involved in the Apache Wars in the 1880s. In this work, he accuses the U.S. government of bad faith dealings and unwarranted mistreatment against friendly Apaches. In the author's preface, he claims that "No effort at romantic embellishment or poetic description will be made," as declares a conscious decision to avoid common pejorative terms for the Native Americans, who he considered "a race of fellow human beings whose many fine qualities we have been too prone to cloud under hate and misunderstanding." Quaife mentions in his historical introduction that he was also the editor of the first edition of this work, published by the Yale University Press in 1929. The plates reproduce photos of Geronimo, the author and his commanders, and other scenes from the war.
