Purple cloth faintly discoloured on the spine, a few minor marks, very light wear corners, but text block very clean and tight, a handsome copy. 24.5 x 17.5cm.

First edition with these plates, this edition de luxe limited to 150 copies bound in full vellum with gilt borders and lettering to the front board and spine. Vellum darkened, rubbed and scuffed extensively all around, a few small stains, boards soiled, with blue discoloration to the rear board. Hinges strengthened, the silk ties lacking. Light staining to the fore-edge of the rear endpaper, with shallow marginal stain to the top of the last few pages, but otherwise internally very clean and bright, the binding tight, all plates present with captioned tissue-guards (guard facing p. 218 detached). Darkened and rubbed copy, but still a good one.

In the original full vellum binding with gilt decoration and titles to the front board and spine. Top page edges gilted; remainder untrimmed. With tipped in frontispiece and 31 colour tipped-in plates by Warwick Goble. Goble (1862-1943) had become a resident illustrator at Macmillan and this is one of finest works. Contents are complete and in near fine clean condition. Endpapers have some browning. There is the occasional small pinprick spot in the text and some spotting on the uncut edges of the text pages. Plates are mounted on brown stock paper and are in lovely condition. The binding has lost its ties and there is some pocking to the vellum, slight marking and some scuffs. There is light pulling to spine ends and some wear to corners. The gilt decoration is still bright. Please enquire if you would like to see additional images.
