Ces discours marquant l'apogée de la rhétorique grecque. « La mort ne saurait être honteuse pour un homme résolu, ni prématurée pour un ancien consul, ni affligeante pour un sage », lance Cicéron à ses adversaires au début de la Ne Catilinaire. Ces paroles, prononcées par un homme qui connaîtra l'exil pour avoir étouffé la conjuration de Catilina, qui sera égorgé par les amis politiques des factieux de 63, ne ressortissent pas à la seule rhétorique. Cicéron a sincèrement cru avoir infléchi le cours des événements par la seule vertu de son verbe : c'est à une réflexion sur le pouvoir de la parole face à la violence la plus aveugle que nous invitent aujourd'hui encore les discours politiques de Cicéron.
