Flagg (assumed to be Josiah F. Flagg, M.D. of Boston). Overall set is in good condition. Vol. I has been rebound in cloth. Good binding. All pages trimmed and edges marbled. Pages clean and clear (no foxing). In very good (nearly fine) condition. Volumes II-IV are in original state, contemporary boards with some cover corners bumped, moderate shelf wear. Vol. IV has one corner lost due to bumping and moderate scattered foxing throughout. Ex-library (Boston University) stamps and markings scattered throughout. Pages clean and clear, deckled edges. Includes the first description of glaucoma in which heightened interocular pressure is recognized, credit for which goes to the author's father, Pierre Demours (1702-95), whose portrait appears in the atlas in recognition of this. The atlas also contains the first French translation of Sommerring with additional plates -- "This four volume work is one of the most important and elaborate books on the diseases of the eye of that period. Antoine Demours was one of the great ophthalmic surgeons of the eighteenth century. It includes the first full description of glaucoma in which heightened interocular pressure is recognized (vol. I pp. 468-472, vol. III pp. 203-276). The second and third volumes contain several hundreds of carefully described case histories obtained in the course of the author's twenty years of experience and from his father's nearly fifty years of practice. The fourth volume in quarto has a fine portrait of Pierre Demours, the father and a biographical notice (vol. I pp. XXVII-XXXIII). It also contains the very fine color printed plates with accompanying text including the first edition in French of Samuel Thomas Soemerring's anatomical atlas of the eye (plates 1-13), which together with Zinn's monograph is the basis for all modern research on the structure of the eye.
