Etat : Gut. 175 p. Inside in very good condition. With 320 illustrations, 280 in color. Posters of the WPA chronicles a fascinating and hitherto unknown development of American graphic design that took place between 1935 and 1943, years darkened by the Great Depression and World War II. In this remarkable eight-year period, a program sponsored by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) printed 2 million posters from 35.000 designs. This production was called at the time by P. M. Weekly, "poster art more vital than any this country has ever known." And yet in the years that followed, little attention was given to this extraordinary design activity. The story of the WPA posters and the artists who designed them has been unjustly overlooked, but its place in the history of American graphic design is reinstated with this first in-depth study of the WPA poster. . This is a collector's edition of discovery and appreciation for the nearly lost art of the WPA poster. They have importance not as an overlooked curiosity or as a scholarly footnote, but as a vital body of work that is a significant part of our national art heritage.
