A later printing of Detmold's illustrated edition, first published in 1921. This English retelling of Fabre's famous collection of essays on insects and arachnids marries scientific information with mythology and folklore. As noted by Houfe, E. J. Detmold "became one of the best Edwardian animal illustrators. His sense of composition and the decorative placing of the animal in its natural habitat was much more subtle than the natural history painters" (p. 115). Simon Houfe, The Dictionary of 19th Century British Book Illustrators and Caricaturists, 1998. Quarto. Original green cloth, spine and front cover lettered and decorated in gilt, top edge green. With dust jacket. Housed in original box reproducing the jacket design on the front panel. With 12 mounted colour plates and with captioned tissue guards. Mottling to cloth, foxing to edges and endpapers, contents clean; foxing to slightly creased jacket flaps and to verso, couple of nicks, without price as issued: a very good copy in like jacket, preserving the original box, a little rubbed and toned with a small indentation on the front panel.
