Hard Cover. Etat : Good+. Etat de la jaquette : Fair. First Edition. 453 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). Map. "(E)mploys a comprehensive approach to the behavioral processes of the peoples of this important area of the world. At a time when much of the literature on the Middle East is either historical in nature or limited to specific target studies, Ailon Shiloh has compiled a volume of articles that integrate political, historical, economic, demographic, and health data into the study of culture and behavior. (His) introduction encapsulates a history of the area from the birth of civilization to the Six-Day-War of 1967. The articles that follow are written by a variety of perceptive scholars, many of whom are native to the Middle East or have lived and worked there for a number of years. The book is divided into five sections - The Distribution of Peoples, Cultures and Subcultures, Population Dynamics, Culture Change and Conservatism, and The Schoolteacher as Anthropologist - covering either the cultural history of the area or the effects of pressures toward fundamental culture change." Wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, two tiny dints and light soiling on bottom of text block, minor soiling on fore-edge of text block, previous owner's name and erased pencil name on front free end paper, soft creases across contents page. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has moderate edgewear/wrinkling, chips and tears - some with creases, area of discoloration on spine, light rubbing and some tiny scuff marks - now protected in removable mylar sleeve.
