First edition. Large cuarto, 27.5 x 19cm, pp [776], xlvi, [60. (Palau 91496). With 3 large folding maps, 61 x 48.25cm, colored, one of the country, one of the Valley of Mexico, and one of the city of Mexico itself. Vol. 1 only; the second volume dealt with the rest of the country. Marvellously detailed overview of Mexico City at the height of the Porfiriato, underlining, with a triumphalist tone, the many improvements in the country. The number of black and white photos, of good quality, in the book is in the hundreds, showing businesses and factories -- both inside and out, museums, streets, schools, hospitals, railways and trams, etc. In addition are complete directories for business and homes -- a precursor to the telephone directory. The final section -- 46 pp -- is comprised of business ads. There is also much information of a general nature on the history, geography, political and intellectual strata of the country. The volume is heavy and copies in decent shape must be difficult to find: however, this copy is in excellent condition. The binding is the publisher's own decorative cloth binding, with gold and black embossed floral pattern and the Mexican eagle and cactus. Beautiful copy.
