First edition hardcover, bound in dark green decorative cloth, with gilt lettering on the spine, is in G+ condition, having bump and wear to corners, some light wrinkling to the beginning pages; former owner's book sticker on first fixed endpaper; some ghosts of former penciled prices on same fixed EP; slight shaking between mildly-foxed frontispiece and advertisement page; overall, moderate surface, edge, and handling wear. The frontispiece (the only illustration in the volume) is an engraving of a profile of Michelangelo. Artists biographies of Michelangelo and Raphael, and art analysis. DB.

Englische Ausgabe, herausgegeben von William Hazlitt (ordentliches Exemplar, teils etwas fleckig, vorderes Gelenk geplatzt, kleiner Eckausschnitt am vorderen fliegenden Vorsatz). Auf dem hinteren fliegenden Vorsatz eine handgeschriebene Notiz über die Eiserne Krone der Lombardei und deren Übergabe an Victor Emmanuel durch die Österreicher, datiert 1866). Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 550 8°. Schwarzes Halbleder der Zeit mit goldgeprägtem Rückentitel, marmorierte Überzugspapiere (etwas berieben).

Etat : Very Good. 1st edition. Original blind stamped cloth, VG+. vi+474pp, engraved frontis, index, bookplate & ownership address, cloth a little rubbed & bumped and with slight staining to the rear panel, some of the paper stock used to print the book has browned, offsetting from the frontis to the title, but an attractive copy none the less. A first edition of Hazlitt's translation of two works on Italian artists. Of Duppa's biography of Michalangelo Hazlitt remarks 'a critical biography of Michal Angelo, of a wholly satisfactory nature, already existed, from the pen, well known as a most competent one, of Mr Duppa. His work, accordingly, is here re-produced entire'. Of De Quincy's account of the life & work of Raffaello he writes ''a work which has received the sanction of all of Europe'. 500 grams.

Half-Leather. Etat : Very Good. No Jacket. Biography. Early printing, not first. Custom three-quarter green leather over light green cloth rubbed on the edges with small scuff, spine sunned to brown. Gilt titles and rules on the six-panel spine are good but not bright, date 1866 at the foot. Interior clean and tight, quarter inch touch of moisture stain on the top corner of the first five sheets, top edge gilt. Good collectible copy.
