Tape residue to both endpapers and pastedowns along with pen and pencil inscriptions to front endpaper. Slight dog-eared pages throughout and distinctive tanning to text block edges. Boards have visible rubbing and noticeable bumping to corners with fair crushing to spine ends. Fraying of cloth to tail end of spine as well.

One of a set of books describing the Counties of the British Isles as they existed before 1973. This volume covers Durham. The county differs from other counties of England in that it was ruled independently by its Palatine Bishops. The author traces the growth and development of the county over two volumes of which this is the second. The author continues the story with the advent of the industrial revolution, and the Victorian age up to the mid 20th Century. He covers the social and political history, as well as the development of education and the University, the end of the Paltinate. There are appendices of the Bishops of Durham, Tree of Neville and List of Durham Churches.
