Publisher's decorated blue paper hardcover, gilt title/design on spine/boards, matched blue endpapers, text pages framed with gilt borders. CONDITION NOTES: Good; wear commensurate with age and use (e.g. sunned spine cover and board edges, fine cover tears at front hinge crown/heel, light age-toned text pages), strong square spine/tight binding. A nice copy. Measures: .5 W x 5.25 D x 9 H inches. About the work and author: Sir Richard Francis Burton (1821 - 1890) was asked in 1849 by the Indian Navy and the Royal Geographical Society of Great Britain to investigate the region of the unknown Somali Country in East Africa. In 1850 The East India Company gave permission for an expedition to ascertain the productive resources in the region. After many obstacles and delays the expedition began in 1854. The Kasidah of Haji Abdu El-Yezdi is a long poem written by "Haji Abdu El-Yezdi," who was an invention by the true author Sir Burton. The Kasidah of Haji Abdu El-Yezdi translates to "Lay of the Higher Law". The Kasidah was a distillation of Sufi thought. Burton hoped to bring the ideas of Sufism to the West. This book has a biography for the assumed author as well as notes on the poem itself.

Etat : Very Good. Second impression. From Wikipedia: The Kasîdah of Hâjî Abdû El-Yezdî is a long English language poem written by "Hâjî Abdû El-Yezdî", a pseudonym of the true author, Sir Richard Francis Burton (1821-1890), a well-known British Arabist and explorer In a note to the reader, Burton claims to be the translator of the poem, to which he gives the English title "Lay of the Higher Law" It is thus a pseudotranslation, pretending to have had an original Persian text, which never existed The Kasidah is essentially a distillation of Sufi thought in the poetic idiom of that mystical tradition; Burton had hoped to bring Sufist ideas to the West This American edition is in black cloth with gilt titles on the spine (in English) and the front cover (in Arabic) The spine ends and corners are very slightly bumped, and there is slight foxing on the page edges, but no other marks or damage The signature of the once popular silent-era actor Francis X Bushman is on the front pastedown, indicating that it was likely owned by him Francis Xavier Bushman (1883 ââ " 1966) was an American film actor and director His career as a matinee idol started in 1911 in the silent film His Friend's Wife He gained a large female following and was one of the biggest stars of the 1910s and early 1920s 169 pp.
