Quarto; original green cloth, with gilt title label on spine; no dustwrapper; pp. (iv) + 363, incl. index; two folding maps. Good condition. Spine sunned and mottled; earlier owner's name on front pastedown; label remnant to front pastedown; some rippling to endpapers; some foxing. Good. "With regard to the imposing work of Roberts (1951, The Mammals of South Africa) we find ourselves in some difficulty. The canon "de mortuis . . . " is one to which men of goodwill universally subscribe: on the other hand we believe that in scientific work there is an overriding consideration. We therefore record, with regret, that the scientific thought of the last few decades appears to have had little influence on this author's taxonomic assessments, and that his systematics to the last were little advanced from those of Père Heude who, in the 1880s, had five specimens of Sika Deer from the island of Formosa, and described five species.".
