Stipple engraving, from 'Contemporary Portraits', Sir Charles had a particular interest in improving scientific instruments. He gave giving his name to the Englefield mountain barometer and devised a portable telescope for astronomers.

[ii], iv[vi], 147[1] pp, aquatint plates including frontis, woodcuts within the pagination. Contemporary tan 1/2 calf, raised bands, gilt rules to compartments, gilt blindstamped marbled boards, speckled leaf edges. 21.5 cm x 14 cm. Repairs to front joint & spine tips, rear joint cracked but holding firm, wear with minor loss to corners, chipping to board edges, ticket to front paste down endpaper, contents slightly age browned with some random foxing.

Fine leather bound, best edition complete with all twelve plates with five woodcuts in the text. The book is bound in recent three quarter morocco with marbled boards, the binding has some very light wear only and is bright and tight. The pastedown h as old owner's and 'Society of the Holy Child' plates.There is some light foxing / browning throughout with some pages and plates more heavily affected. Illustrated, [12] + 147.

The third item is unrecorded although a later, 1876, edition, "considerably enlarged" and running to 30 pages is listed at three locations in the U.K.: Southampton, Birmingham and Lambeth Palace.
