Slight cracking to hinges, with exposed netting, pages remain attached. Pages are lightly tanned throughout. Boards have moderate shelf-wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Light tanning to spine and edges with crushing to spine ends and water marking to spine. Splits to spine ends causing cloth to be frayed. Wear marks overall.

This work was originally published in 1813 and became an instant success, making the author aprominent figure in literary society. This work became a standard handbook for classical tourists and is illustrated with plans of churches he visited during this trip. The third edition of this work. Volume I is lacking the folding map. With all ten plates to volume II, some folding, depicting church plans. Collated, lacking the large map to volume I. Binder's stamp to the front pastedown, Dixon, Binder. This celebrated work documents Eustace's 1801-1802 journey to Italy as a tutor and companion to three gentleman. The first publication of this work was in 1813 and earned him an instant success, with the work going through eight editions between 1813 and 1841. In full calf bindings. Externally, generally smart. Spines have suffered a small amount of rubbing, with the gilded lettering fading. Joint and hinges to volume I are weak and may detach with further handling. Front joint to volume II is starting but firm. Rear joint to volume II has a small crack to the head. Hinges to volume III are starting but firm. Front joint to volume IV is starting but firm. Crack to rear joint of volume IV with the hinge starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright. Scattered spotting to pages, heavier to the first and last few pages. Bookplate on front pastedowns. Half leather over marbled boards, with some rubbing. Complete with the large folding map in vol. 1 ( approx. 3ft by 16 inches ), which is in very good condition, with a one inch tear in the margin. Vol 2 contains 10 plans ( 2 folding ). All pages still clean and bright.
