Edition originale
hardcover. 1932 First Edition. 320pp, original blue cloth front endpaper removed, Fair. Admiral Edward Ratcliffe Garth Russell Evans, 1880 1957, was a Royal Navy officer and Antarctic explorer. Evans was seconded from the Navy to the Discovery expedition to Antarctica in 1901 1904, when he served on the crew of the relief ship, and afterwards began planning his own Antarctic expedition. However, he suspended this plan when offered the post of second-in-command on Robert Falcon Scott's ill-fated Terra Nova expedition to the South Pole in 1910 1913, as captain of the expedition ship Terra Nova. He accompanied Scott to within 150 miles of the Pole, but was sent back in command of the last supporting party. On the return he became seriously ill with scurvy and only narrowly survived. This is one of several novels that he wrote. Glacier Books are experienced and professional booksellers. We take pride in offering carefully described books and excellent customer service.

hardcover. First Edition. A fine copy in a near fine Dust Jacket missing a single tiny chip to the rear panel. Gift inscription on half title page, small poem clipping affixed to dedication page. The author was second officer of the 'Morning', the ship sent out by the Royal Geographical Society in 1904 to relieve Scott's first Antarctic expedition. In 1909 he was selected by Scott himself as second-in-command of his second expedition and as captain of the 'Terra Nova,' accompanying Scott in January 1912 to within 150 miles of the Pole before he turned back due to illness. Evans was also a naval hero during World War I and later commanded the Australian fleet. Frontispiece, pictorial endpapers and colorful jacket illustration by Manning deV. Lee. An oddly uncommon title and quite rare in Dust Jacket.
