Decorative Cloth. Etat : Very Good. First Edition. Illustrated with 42 plates (all within pagination, 9 colored, with tissue guards, 33 black and white), xi + 306 pages, deckle edges, top edges gilt. True first edition. Everard was a noted player, a Member of the R & A, and a keen student and historian of the game. While his first book, an 1896 instructional targeting beginners titled Golf in Theory and Practice, was popular enough to be reprinted in 1901 and 1910, Everard is best remembered for writing this inaugural history of the R & A, the most famous golf club in the world playing over the most famous golf links in the world, St. Andrews. The color illustrations are the one of the earliest uses of them in a golf book. Eminently readable even today. Chapters include: Early References to Golf at St. Andrews, The Origin of the "Royal and Ancient," First Competition and Method of Scoring, A Tariff for Payment of Caddies, Early Scores and the Inception of the Stimy (sic), The Amateur Championship, Ownership of the Links, The Open Championship, and finally, the famous Dempster Case concerning the right to raise rabbits over the links (fascinating). Bound in original publisher's olive-green cloth with gilt titling to spine, front cover decoration and lettering in black, all in very good condition. No stains or soiling, no cloth lifting or fading. The gilt lettering and top page edge gilt is fine, cover illustration of the town of St. Andrews also fine. Original endpapers without hinge cracking or wear, with pastedown offset. Pages edges foxed, light internal foxing, no soiling, staining, notations, underlining, creases, or tears.
