He Saved the Peregrine Falcon. Karl Heinz Günter Meng (1924-2016), was born in Brühl, Baden (Germany). His parents emigrated to America in 1929 and Meng was raised in upstate New York where he developed a love of the outdoors. Heinz Meng was educated at Cornell and was a member of the faculty of SUNY New Paltz from his appointment in 1951 until his retirement in 2001 (he worked as an adjunct professor from 2002-2006). He is perhaps best known in the conservation community as the person credited with the recovery of the peregrine falcon in the eastern U.S. In 1967, Meng succeeded in breeding the peregrine falcon in captivity, at a time of population collapse after the indiscriminate postwar use of DDT and other pesticides. The archive and collection comprises 375 photographs by Heinz Meng, Elizabeth Meng, and others, chiefly black and white, including 270 8 x 10 inches, many docketed on verso identifying photographer or marking for production), with some duplicates; and more than 100 smaller format, some color. The photographs depict peregrines from hatchlings to mature birds, Meng as he trains and hunts the falcons, feeding scenes of the young bird, outdoor scenes, hawks in flight. Four albums or scrapbooks (approx. 132 leaves) include family documents, articles, clippings, letters, and ephemera, most with inclusions on both sides. Meng's birth registration and U.S. immigration card (age five) are preserved, and the letter of admission to Cornell. The clippings and ephemera chart hawk-watching and conservation efforts in New York, and the publicity arising from the breeding projects in the wider world. In-depth record of the career of a remarkable ornithologist and conservation, with remarkable visual content. Generally very good (some ephemera trimmed at margins, some staining) More than 375 photographs by Heinz Meng, Elizabeth Meng, and others, chiefly black and white (270 8 x 10 inches; more than 100 smaller format, some color), many docketed on verso identifying photographer or marking for production); one original drawing on paper of a peregrine with wings outrsteched; with four albums of family documents, articles, clippings, letters, and ephemera (approx. 132 leaves, most with inclusions on both sides). 4to and smaller.
