Paperback. Etat : Very Good. Not Stated (illustrateur). A scarce set of mid 20th century Westerns in original pictorial binding, all part of the "Chosen" Western series by Wells Gardner, Darton & Co. A smart set of mid-twentieth-century popular Westerns, in their original pictorial paperback bindings. All early editions, part of the "Chosen" Western series by Wells Gardner, Darton & Co.Included in this set are the following novels:Cherokee Fowler by Chuck Stanley, first issued as a "Chosen" Western in 1946 (first published in 1945 by Phoenix Press in New York).Larabee of Big Spring by Chuck Stanley, first issued as a "Chosen" Western in 1948 (first published in 1947 by Phoenix Press in New York).Saddle Pals by Will Watson, first issued as a"Chosen" Western in 1948 (first published in 1947 by Phoenix Press in New York). The first ever Western novel is often considered to be The Virginian by Owen Wister, published in 1902. From this point on, Westerns, especially Western short stories, gained popularity, especially through the new medium of pulp magazines. The 1940s saw an influx of seminal Western novels, includingThe Ox-Bow Incident by Walter van Tilburg Clark (1940) and The Big Sky by A.B. Guthrie Jr. (1947), which lead to an increased popularity in the genre. In the publisher's original paperback binding. Externally, smart, with some light shelf and edgewear, and some light bumping to the heads and tails of the spines and extremities. A few small tidemarks to the rears of the paperback bindings. Internally, all volumes firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned with the odd spot, but are otherwise clean throughout. Very Good. book.
