This Engineer Mine Handbook was prepared to assist the field soldier in identifying and neutralizing enemy mines and smaller explosive charges. It was recommended to be carried by officers and non-commissioned officers engaged in mine field reconnaissance or removal during WWII. VERY SCARCE.

Octavo, xxii, 343pp. Red hardcover, title in gilt on black spine. Stated "1st Printing" on copyright page. Solid text block, light wear to spine ends and bottom corners, a near fine example. In the publisher's dust jacket, faint transference to bottom front corner, light wear to edges, a near fine example. Signed on the half-title: "To Michael / With thanks for all you and your family mean to our nation - Stan McChrystal." Colin Powell (1937-2021) served as the United States Secretary of State during the George W. Bush administration, the first African American to hold the post. He also served as National Security Advisor to President Ronald Reagan (1987-1989) and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1989-1993. Powell was discussed as a possible Republican presidential contender in 1996 and 2000, but he declined to run both times. He passed away in 2021, survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Alma Powell.

Inscribed on the front flyleaf "19 December 79 / To General Bernard W. Rogers / Great soldier, human being and friend. of whom much has been asked, and from whom the nation has received a full measure of courage, character and commitment. In recollection of his first visit as SACEUR and CINCEUR to the Army War College, and of long and valued friendship. / Dewitt C. Smith Jr. Major General, US." This book is inscribed by Lt. Gen. DeWitt C. Smith Jr, the longest serving commandant of the U.S. Army War College. During World War II, Smith served with the 53rd Armored Infantry Division in Europe, earning a Silver Star, two Bronze Stars and three Purple Hearts. He died in 2005 and was buried in Arlington Cemetery. The recipient of this copy was Gen. Bernard William Rogers (1921-2008), a decorated US Army General who served as the Chief of Staff of the US Army, NATO's Supreme Allied Commander- Europe, and Commander in Chief of United States European Command.

David H. Petraeus." General David Petraeus is a retired army general, who served as the head of U.S. Central Command and Commanding General, Multi-National-Force-Iraq. As Commanding General in Iraq, he oversaw the "troop surge," which arguably broke the ongoing counterinsurgency in the country, allowing for a reduction in troop strength in the country. After retiring from the army, he briefly served as the director of the CIA.
