Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition (SD). As you can see from the photos, the covers are in very nice condition, quite clean (just a few light inconspicuous spots) and pretty much free of any wear. The edges and corners are in excellent shape. So is the spine. The lettering on the front cover looks like gilt and then looks like silver depending upon how you angle it. I'm guessing that was intended as a metaphor on changing time zones in relationship to position/place. Does the same thing on the spine. Anyway the interchangeable gilt and silver coloring is quite bright. When you open up the book you will see the bookplate of J. T. Fraser who had a few things to say about time and owned quite a few books on the subject (check out the others that he owned and I've placed for sale). Here's a little bit about Dr. Fraser from the first paragraph of his Wikipedia profile: 'J. T. Fraser (1923-2010) made important scholarly contributions to the interdisciplinary Study of Time and was a founding member of the International Society for the Study of Time. His work has strongly influenced thinking about the nature of time across the disciplines from physics to sociology, biology to comparative religion, and he was a seminal figure in the general interdisciplinary study of temporality.' If you keep reading his Wikipedia profile you'd better have a scholarly background in concepts of time, heady stuff. On a more mundane plane (but still quite important), the interior of the book is in just as nice condition as the covers. The pages are exceptionally clean (I saw only a few specks) and have little to no wear, the tip of three or four top corners have a tiny crease. There are no turned-down corners creases or placeholder creases. There are no markings. The bookplate is the only attachment. It's on the front inside cover. It has a few tan spots (see photo). There is a fold-out double-sided color map. One side is titled Standard Time Zones of the World. The other is titled USSR: Time Zones. It's in very nice shape, no tears. It does have a little bit of amber spotting, not too conspicuous and only on the blank white margins. I should mention that there's a light amount of tiny dust stains on the page edges. However I didn't see any of it migrating onto the actual pages. On the rear inside cover there are three red letters just off the top edge. Looks like IDX, no idea what that means. Dr. Fraser did not write anything in the text of this book, which I guess means they got everything right. Forgot to mention the binding. It's excellent. The book is square and very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. From the Introduction: 'International Time Tables makes it possible to determine time relationships of places around the world and to visualize those time relationships over the spectrum of a full day. The tables are structured to provide time in both the 12- and 24-hour forms of notation. For places that observe Advanced Time, also known as Daylight Savings Time or Summer Time, separate tables are given for each period of the year. For places with multiple time zones, separate sets of tables are given for each time zone. The effect of the International Dateline on time relationships is also taken into account.'.

Hardcover. First edition. Folio. 160pp. Original textured tan cloth with black lettering on cover and spine in original illustrated dustjacket, black lettering on spine. Cartographic green endpapers. Title page illustrated with maps. "Palapala'aina is the title of a projected series of books about the mapping of Hawai'i. This first volume, The Early Mapping of Hawai'i, covers the initial phase of mapmaking in the islands. The Early Mapping if Hawai'i is an overview of the history of the mapping of Hawai'i from the time of European discovery in 1778 through the mid-19th century. Mapmaking was not an art indigenous to Hawai'i; foreigners were responsible for the introduction of mapmaking in the islands. For well over seventy years, mapping in Hawai'i was largely carried out by Europeans or Americans, and the early maps of Hawai'i were mostly made to serve the needs of those foreigners." (Preface). Profusely illustrated with early color and b/w maps of Hawai'i, b/w photographs and drawings throughout. Contains notes, citations of illustrations, bibliography and index at rear. Minor wear along edges of dustjacket with foxing on top and foredge of block, small smudge at foredge of page 155. Very good to near fine condition.
