Etat : Collectible. Edwin Forbes (illustrateur). FIRST. nFINE. SUPERB HIGH GRADE 1886 CONDITION BOOK. Illustrated front and rear boards in brown and tan. Maroon cloth spine with deep embossed ornate titling. We - as adults - take for granted the detailed historical books discussing battles, tactics, political intrigues. social ideologies and the depths of leadership on both sides of America's seminal historical event that solidified the nation conceived in 1776. What we overlook is the passing along of our national memory to future generations. We don't just wait for youth to grow up and then tell them the tales and stories of dedication and devotion by their forebears. We talk about at the first opportunity so they grow up appreciating what their parents and grandparents did to make out great country. In 1886 this notion wasn't just a literary notion, but an absolute physical reality. Families were absent fathers, grandfathers, brothers, mothers, sisters, aunts, uncles and cousins or real and of recent memory. So to explain all this, the stories needed to be told to the new children - unborn when the struggle occurred but important to their young new lives none the less. The simple language and nearly 100 detailed illustrations of this book conveyed this important knowledge to a new generation ready to learn and understand what happened - in no candy-coated terms. Life, death, dedication and years of warring. This copy is in incredible surviving condition, with the cover boards images in almost original condiiton, no crayoning, pencilling, torn pages or other erosions internally typically seen in 'children's' books and toys of this age - 124 years since publication (at date of linternet listing 2010). A rare (post) Civil War memento for the collector of USA historical childrens material. Front illustration is Sherman posed by a cannon at an artillery battery. Rear illustrations - sniper behind a tree, a cavalryman astride his mount, a cannon casson pulled by six horses - 3 mounted - running at-speed. [B45-217].
