Binding remains firm.Pages are moderately tanned. Pen inscription to front free end paper. Boards have moderate edge-wear with bumping to corners and noticeable rubbing to surfaces. Jacket is detached at spine. Jacket has heavy edge-wear with some areas of loss, heavy tears, chips and creasing.

The author traces the history of the Abbey from founding to destruction in 1539 by order of King Henry VIII.

The endpapers are browning and have owner's plates, inscriptions, etc. The various folding maps and plates are in good condition, the two pullout maps have some marginal browning. Very good and sound red cloth hard back with gilt decoration. Top edge gilt. This copy has a signed dedication dated October 24 1926 to Sir Arthur Keith by Lord Montague of Beaulieu. It bears a book plate of the Royal College Of Surgeons Library to the front pastedown, and there are RCS library stamps to the reverse of most of the plates. Sir Arthur Keith was Conservator at the RCS and was involved with the Piltdown Man investigation, even being suspected as a perpetrator of the hoax. ; Black & white photographs, drawings and maps; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; xiii 228 pages.
