First edition in the original cloth binding. With a loosely inserted author's compliments slip. A first edition copy of Sir Francis Fremantle's memoirs of his experiences serving as a medical officer in the Second Boer War. Fremantle became chairman of the Parliamentary Medical Committee from 1923 to 1943 and was recognised as a spokesperson for the medical profession during this time. Includes 34 photographs in plates, and 31 pen and ink drawings, one of which is a fold-out map. Collated complete. First edition in the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally smart with slight wear to the head and tail of the spine and a minor shelf wear mark to the back board. Slight warping to the front board. Internally, binding strained. Pages bright and clean, with some spotting to the front and rear free endpapers. Slight loss to page 159, not affecting the text. Very Good. book.

Given on board the Milford, St George s Harbour, Lissa, 28 July 1812. The Captain of HMS Neptune at Trafalgar. Vice-Admiral Sir Thomas Fremantle (1765-1819) served with Hood and Nelson in the Mediterranean, distinguishing himself at Toulon in 1795, Leghorn and Elba in 1796, and Santa Cruz in 1797, when he was severely wounded. In command of H.M.S. Ganges he took a full part in the Battle of Copenhagen (1804). In May 1805 he was appointed to H.M.S. Neptune, which was the third ship in the weather line at the Battle of Trafalgar, the Temeraire alone coming between her and the Victory. Fremantle later commanded in the Adriatic, capturing Fiume in 1813 and Trieste in 1814.

Hoste was one of the great frigate captains of the Napoleonic wars, taking part in six major actions, including the Battle of Lissa (1811).
