pp. (20), 576 + Engraved frontispiece. Title vignette. WITH 267 Engraved copperplate text illustrations skillfully executed mainly by Pieter Devel. Various decorative head and tail pieces throughout. Old binding with the leather mostly worn away BUT **Four engraved and chased decorative rococo Silver corner pieces, and a decorative silver closure strap and receiver remain. The survival of this silver 'furniture' is remarkable. Text has some age stain but this in not too distracting. Dedicated to Monseigneur le Dauphin, eldest son of Louis XIV (1661-1711). Louis de France, known as Le Grand Dauphin or Monseigneur, died before his father, Louis XIV, and so never inherited the throne. This Bible history is attributed to Nicolas Fontaine (1625-1709). Brunet IV, 1433. The detailed engraved illustrations made it one of the most popular biblical works of the 17th and 18th century. Many of them are in the style of Jan Luyken (1649-1712). This edition is scarce, especially in a silver enhanced binding. SAFE ADD 1.

Hardcover. Etat : Fine. First edition. Two works, jointly issued, 12mo (16.2 cm x 9.9 cm): [24], 102, [2]; [32] 311 [9, table, approbation and errata]pp. Each work with full, dated title-page. Roman, italic and Hebrew letter; printed side-glosses in Latin; woodcut decorations and initials. Contemporary green morocco, covers and spine elaborately tooled in gilt, red morocco gilt label, marbled pastedowns and endleaves, all edges gilt. A touch of rubbing at the extremities, else fine copies, handsomely bound. First editions of these French-language paraphrases of the books of Ecclesiastes and Job. It includes an essay on the urim and thummim, the Hebrew terms first appearing in the biblical book of Exodus that had been (and are) interpreted to refer to elements of the breastplate of the High Priest. Hardouin argues that the words refer to nothing material and solid and mean 'lights' and 'perfections'. The text of the Latin Vulgate is printed at the side-margins alongside Hardouin's French-language versions of the biblical texts, with notes in French below. The chapters of Ecclesiastes also have French-language introductions. The French Jesuit Hardouin (1646-1729), who was the son of a bookseller, is a very interesting scholar because he developed an extreme view on literary forgery. He held for example that most of the Greco-Roman classics had been written in the thirteenth century. References: Conlon 29: 531; 530. De Backer & Sommervogel 4:104, nos. 85; 86. Edité par Manuscript on paper bound. [19th century?]
Vendeur : Rodger Friedman Rare Book Studio, ABAA, Tuxedo, NY, Etats-Unis
Etat : Good. Octavo (18 cm); [1], 78 leaves, paginated in manuscript. Latin and French text on facing pages. Bound in waste vellum manuscript in French, no longer easily legible. Pages thumbed and toned at edges. Interlinear corrections in text, as well as tipped in overleavers with corrected text. All we know of this manuscript book derives from examination of the physical evidence. The text does not correspond to any known French verse translation of the Book of Job, so it seems to be a private endeavor. The unprofessional cursive orthography accords stylistically with handwriting typical of the 19th century, but the structure and materials of the binding could indicate an earlier origin. The Latin text of the Vulgate appears on the pages facing the translation.
