First edition. Scarce thriller from the American author from Batavia, NY, Audrey Gaines [Schultz] (1899-1968). Gaines only published 5 thrillers, generally "Who done its" with eerie/spooky components in Southern settings, before retiring from writing. All of her books sold quite well and she became popular in her time, from her first book in 1939 through her last in 1952. A scarce book. Hubin pg 160. 8vo, 255pp. Publisher's terra cotta cloth, spine lettered in black in jacket by Arthur Hawkins. Rubbing at spine ends and corner tips, page block edges toned, former owner's bookplate to ffep. Jacket rubbed and chipped along folds and at spine ends, with loss at head of spine. A very good copy in good example of the scarce jacket.
