On 1 January 1806 Galpine published A Synoptical Compend of British Botany, his translation of Compendium florae Britannicae (1800) by Sir James Edward Smith. It gave references to illustrations, mostly in English Botany (1790 1814, 36 vols.) by J. Sowerby and J. E. Smith, and was designed for taking on botanizing excursions, using its tabular check-list arrangement in the new, pocket-size, duodecimo format" -ODNB. Cloth. Etat : Very Good. 1st Edition. Uncommon in 1st edition. WorldCat lists only one copy at Aberdeen, no BL holding. Spine faded and some wear to hinges, worst at ends but not bad. Small snag to leather just above the author's name. Early 19th c. diced leather boards with bumping to corners and a few minor marks. Internally hinges intact but a slightly unusual binding has the stitching on top of the paper. Offsetting to leading edges of end papers and a small tear to front edge of front e.p. and an early owners name on fixed one. Frontis and title page are heavily foxed and this extends onto dedication and introduction pages. The last few leaves have scattered foxing and pp38-48 have more serious foxing particularly on pp40-43 (n.b. the pagination is uncommon as, when open, both facing pages have the same page numbers until you get to the index where it reverts to normal numbering). Postage will be confirmed when you enquire or order and for light or very heavy books will vary from the ABE quote which is based on a 1kg parcel. N.B. Postage to the USA will often be quite a bit less than the quote on ABE.
