A limited edition of this work, limited to nine hundred and sixty bound in full cloth, of which the present is numbered five hundred and three. Comprising two volumes, one being the reproduction in facsimile of the original 1764 edition in full cloth, the other a large paper copy in the original publisher's wraps including critical annotations. In the original Spanish.An eighteenth century Spanish treatise with instructions on the cultivation of tobacco by Nicolas Josef Rapun. Originally published in 1764. Illustrated with eleven full page colour plates comprising twenty-nine illustrations and a plan of the Cuba island indicating the parts where to plant tobacco by Galvez. Collated, complete. Two volumes in the original publisher's full cloth binding with decorative marginal gilt and marbled endpapers, and in the original publisher's uniform paper wraps. Externally very smart with minor shelf wear, minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities to the cloth copy, minor damp marking to the front board. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are bright and clean. Second Lima edition. Quarto, title-page, pp lxxix, vii, 269. [Palau 251938: Sabin 56260] Laws relating to the practice of mining in New Spain (Mexico), prepared by, or most likely for, Josef de Galvez, whose name does not appear on the title page, but does on the final page. First published in Madrid in a folio edition in 1783, then in Lima, in folio, in 1785: then this quarto edition was published the year later; it was republished as late as 1833 in Chile. This celebrated and comprehensive code was drawn up by the Mexican mining court in consultation with the Spanish crown, and served as the basis of the mining law of most Spanish-American countries until the late nineteenth century; it became law also in both Peru and the Río de la Plata viceroyalty in 1794. Galvez, a lawyer by profession, was an important royal official (Visitador), of the highest rank, who spent the years of 1765 - 71 in Mexico . He sponsored the settlement of California and generally reformed Mexican finances and civil service under the new Bourbon dispensation. (He suffered from mental illness and apparently ended his own life.) He was created the Marques de Sonora for his valuable services to the crown, among which may be numbered this digest of mining laws, of which Sabin says it is "a rare and valuable compendium of the old mining laws and mineral customs." This printing house was an important one in colonial Lima; it was a royal orphanage whose members were trained in the trade of printing. Fine, fresh copy, with marbled edges and bound in contemporary vellum (ties missing).

First edition. [2 lvs], xlvi, 214 pp. Illus. with an engraving by Joaquin Fabregat of the Spanish arms and depicting mining implements. Folio. Signed in ink with Galvez' paraph under his printed name. First edition of this "rare and valuable compendium of the old mining laws and mineral customs, printed only for the use of the parties concerned," (Sabin) and meant to govern the workings of silver mining in New Spain. Galvez was a special Minister of the Indies who was instructed to reform the mining laws of Mexico. In this work, which could only be owned by Spanish-born miners, he not only transcribed all the royal decrees concerning mining in New Spain but also provided information concerning mining operations, training, discovery of new mines, and technology and governance. Signed in manuscript with his rubric attesting to the accuracy of the copy. Further editions were published in 1785/6 in Lima (both folio and quarto) and in Santiago in 1833. Sabin 56260. Boards worn with some loss to the tail of the spine hinges split though firm, dampstained along bottom edge, some ink smudges especially to edges of frontispiece, section titles in manuscript on each page, otherwise contents quite sharp, and overall about very good. Full contemporary cat's paw vellum.

Pequeño faltante de piel en la parte inferior del lomo sin importancia. Las hojas muestran el paso del tiempo pero en excelente estado para su lectura. El papel se encuentra en excelente estado. Edición original firmada directamente (firma autógrafa) por Josef de Galvez. Fragmento del último párrafo dice lo siguiente: ??
