Hard Cover. Etat : Near Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good +. First Edition. 175 pp. [1] From the Front Flap: "This book is about dogs used by sportsmen in Britain, and about the field sports in which they take part. It also contains a good deal of reminiscence, digession and chatter about the countryside, from ragwort to ferrets and the scent of lilac after rain. It is written with three intentions: 1) To interest those who are fortunate enough to know the pleasures of the countryside at first hand and perhaps add a little to their knowledge of the dogs they love. 2) To give those who know little about hunting dogs and field sports the story, in non-technical language, of their history, their background, and their place in the English way of life. 3) To provide such information as will enable anyone to say, when justified, "that's a good dog". Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

(Hardcover, 1953). 1953 1st edition. Large 8vo (158 x 253mm). Pp175. B/w illustrations. Blue boards, spine titled in black. Very good copy in slightly used, spine-tanned dust-wrapper. "We think it good, in fact, to state a disclaimer here and now. We have no specific interest in any kind of hound, except that lazy hound, my collaborator and tea addict, who now lounges in yonder chair saying every now and then that he really must be getting on with some work and am I quite sure the teapot is empty? We have no breeds to recommend, pills to sell or backs to scratch. We do not breed puppies for sale, nor have we shares in any kennel or Olde Pette Shoppe. We keep dogs because we like them, and what breeds they are will be discovered only by careful deduction from the following pages, with no prizes to the successful detective. Thank you for listening. The rest of the book is mainly about dogs." Chapters include: Cocker Spaniels; Clumber spaniels; Harriers; Beagles; Basset Hounds; Dachshund; Trail Hounds and Fell Hounds; Labradors; Springer Spaniels; Fox-hunting and Foxhounds; Otter Hounds; Sealyhams and Scottish Terriers; Pekingese; Irish Water Spaniels. .
