Cloth. Etat : Good. None (illustrateur). First edition. A scarce first English Edition of 'The History of the Forty Vezirs'. This text was originally written in Turkish by Sheykh-Zada. Translated into English by the noted Scottish orientalist, Elias John Wilkinson Gibb. Gibb was internationally renowned as a sympathetic and talented orientalist who acquired an extensive knowledge of Arabic and Persian languages, and became especially interested in Turkish language and literature. Featuring a booksellers label to the front pastedown, In a yellow cloth binding. Externally, sound with slight rubbing. Slight bumping to head and tail of spine resulting in closed tears to the cloth. Spine is faded. Hinges tender. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean. Bookseller's label to the front pastedown. Good. book.

Octavo, pp. [i-vii] viii-xxii [xxiii] xxiv-xl [1] 2-420, three-quarter brown leather and pebbled cloth, all panels tooled in gold t.e.g., ribbon marker. First edition of this translation. First complete translation into English, providing 112 tales (the eighty originals, plus variants). These may be tales translated into French by Francois Petis de la Croix and added to the eighth volume of Antoine Galland's LES MILLE ET UNE NUIT (1704-1717), based on ALF LAYLA WA-LAYLA, a manuscript dating from the fourteenth-fifteenth century, and other sources. The French text first appeared in 1707. See Barron (ed), Fantasy Literature 1-3 and 1-23. Early owner's bookplate affixed to the front paste-down. Just a touch of rubbing to leather at spine ends and corner tips, a fine copy. (#148561).
