Etat : Very Good. New York: Hirschl & Adler Modern, 1990. Quarto (27x22.5x0.5cm); 400, including biographical dates and exhibition and performance lists. Twelve full-page color reproductions of the postcard configurations of G&G. Laid taupe-gray card covers stamped in black and carmine red, with deep French flaps, saddle staple bound over textblock. Covers are clean and crisp. Binding is sound and pages unmarked. This is the catalog for the Gilbert & George show at Hirschl & Adler Modern in New York City held from 2 to 25 May 1990. Gilbert & George, with that perpetual air of altarboy straightforwardness they have mastered, here use postcards, antique and contemporary, to evoke delicious and often sexed-up stories.

First Edition. First Edition. INSCRIBED by artists Gilbert and George on front endpaper to noted curator Brenda Richardson, "For Our Dear Brenda / With All Our Love / Gilbert + George / xx xx." From Richardson's collection. Published in conjunction with a traveling exhibition which opened at CAPC Musee d'Art Contemporain de Bordeaux on May 9, 1986 and closed at the Hayward Gallery, London on September 26, 1987. One of the most distinguished art curators and historians of the twentieth century, Brenda Richardson began her career at the University Art Museum in Berkeley (1964-1975), and went on to become the chief curator at the Baltimore Museum Art between 1975 and 1998. An unapologetic champion of contemporary art, she curated well over 70 major exhibitions for the BMA, the high spots being notable stagings for Frank Stella, Brice Marden, Barnett Newman, and Bruce Nauman. She also curated the 1985 exhibition of the Cone Collection, the BMA's prized centerpiece, which contains over 3000 works, including 600 pieces by Matisse, as well as work by Picasso, Cezanne, Gauguin, and others. She has authored and contributed to dozens of books on contemporary art, and John Waters, one of the most significant thinkers in the world of contemporary art, considers Richardson to be his mentor. Near Fine in a Near Fine dust jacket. Two small bumps to fore-edge and top corner of front board and light soiling to front and rear endpapers and table of contents. Jacket with light rubbing overall and light edgewear.
